The recently reconstituted California Amateur Driving Club (CADC) in concert with the California State Fair announced an 8 race amateur driving series.  These races will represent the first amateur racing opportunity in California since 2001.

A total of $28,000 in purse monies are available for the 4 trot and 4 pace races to be run on 3 consecutive Wednesdays beginning August 17, with the finale taking place on Labor Day.  In addition to the augmented purses available for horsemen, the series will benefit a Sacramento-area equine rescue organization where the drivers have pledged to donate through the CADC both their drive fees and entry fees.

The series winner will be eligible to represent California in the Tim Fouts Memorial Amateur Race held each fall during the Grand Circuit meet in Delaware, Ohio.

CADC President David Siegel commented, “Amateur racing is one of the great things that separate participation in harness racing from thoroughbred racing.”  He continued, “Operating within the challenging economic environment we find ourselves today, being able to race horses in amateur events is a helpful selling point when trying to attract new owners to our sport.”

He went on to say “We owe a debt of gratitude to both TVG Network and The California State Fair for giving us this showcase opportunity.”  Traditionally a thoroughbred meet has been run in August with hundreds of thousands of people attendance at the annual State-sponsored Fair.  In 2005, a harness meet is being conducted.
